ABOUT WALUKUBA

Our desire to impact whole communities motivated Dwell to address Uganda's widespread housing needs by focusing our efforts in a localized area. Walukuba, a neighborhood outside the town of Jinja, caught our attention with its distinct health and social concerns. This area contains hundreds of housing structures built by the British colonial government in the 1950s. Originally intended to house migrant workers, these multi-unit buildings evolved into public housing. As the conditions of these buildings declined, the government began transferring ownership to long-time tenants. However, the condition of these buildings pose risks to the health and well being of those who live in them. The original asbestos roofs are cracking, filling the air with their dangerous fibers. Additionally, rats are attracted to the asbestos roofs for breeding and living, creating another health concern in the way they soil the homes and chew through the crumbly old plaster in their quest for food. These buildings lack secure windows and doors and their foundations need reinforcing. As a condition of their ownership, residents are required to improve their properties, and those who are unable are at risk for losing them. Renovations are needed to avoid eviction and to ensure these dwellings are suitable for long-term resident owners. This is where Dwell can help.
